The successful candidate for the position of Associate Editor/Regional Director of Commentary for the Amarillo Globe-News and the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal is responsible for managing the editorial department functions on a daily basis, which includes generating story ideas, editing and producing daily editorials (a minimum of 14 per week), managing staff and understanding the departments’ digital needs. The successful candidate will also be involved in developing and implementing digital strategy for both opinion departments and represent both the Globe-News and Avalanche-Journal at various public functions.  

This position will lead the opinion coverage at both the Amarillo Globe-News and the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.  This is a leadership position within our organization and will require working with photographers, the Center for News and Design (CND) in Austin, Texas, and other editors in a collaborative environment.  

The Associated Editor/Regional Director of Commentary will be the face of our newspapers’ editorial departments, with all the benefits and responsibilities that come with it. This person must be capable of writing timely, engaging locally-focused columns and editorials, maintain a thorough knowledge of events and issues ranging from local to national to ensure that editorial pages cover issues that are the most important and the most relevant to readers.

● Experience writing news editorials and columns 
● Digital content management skills preferred
● Computer literate with typing skills
● Ability to work well under deadlines
● Must have the ability to get along with others

● Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and current auto liability insurance

● Writes and edits daily editorials to ensure quality of thought, storytelling, and adherence to editorial passion of the newspaper.
● Ensures timely production of editorial page content on a daily basis. 
● Organizes and participates in and may preside over Editorial Board meetings with persons such as politicians, officers of corporations, etc., who come to the Avalanche-Journal and Globe-News to discuss particular issues. 
● Retains responsibility for decisions and planning to meet daily and advance production deadlines.
● Selects, curates  and vets editorial cartoons, “letters to the editor” and columnists that run daily, weekly and monthly.
● Leads by example in fostering efforts to integrate newspaper print and digital operations.
● Cooperates and communicates effectively with supervisors, direct reports, and other employees.
● Aids in quality control efforts by reporting factual mistakes, spelling and grammatical errors, inappropriate reader comments, broken links, etc., in all products.
● Uses strong news judgment and knowledge of AP style to edit, curate and post opinion pieces and letters to the editor to both news websites. 
● Writes compelling, clickable headlines that can resonate on the homepages of both websites, on a Google search page or on social media. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: Typically works 40 hours per week in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A degree in journalism, English, a related field or equivalent work experience is required. Prior editing experience at a daily newspaper is preferred. Thorough knowledge of current events and local issues is mandatory.

Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to file documents or store materials throughout the work day. Proper lifting techniques required. May include lifting up to 25 pounds for files, computer printouts on occasion.

The performance of this position may occasionally require exposure to the manufacturing areas where under certain areas require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields and mandatory hearing protection. Primary environment: ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in a typical office environment.
