The Maryland Daily Record is seeking a Legal Editor to oversee its coverage of legal affairs and be its public face to Maryland’s legal community. The ideal candidate has a background in law, has editing experience, is an excellent writer and communicator, has leadership experience and a proven track record of managing a team. He or she must be fluent with the broad spectrum of legal issues now at play in Maryland. The ideal candidate can thrive in a fast-paced environment, is deadline-oriented and has experience creating, editing and posting online, print and social media content. He or she must be able to interact seamlessly with the advertising and circulation departments and be comfortable networking at Daily Record events.
The Legal Editor would work out of the Baltimore office but will be covering and planning statewide news, including coverage of the Maryland General Assembly. The ideal candidate will maintain and expand our coverage across all platforms and bring creative ideas to help grow readership.
The Daily Record’s legal coverage includes: trial court litigation, trends and rulings; pivotal decisions from the appellate courts; trends in law school education; emerging practice specialties; changes in the business of law for solos as well as small and large firms; legislative proposals that affect the judicial system; profiles of major participants in the legal field and regular commentary by legal experts from across the state. We provide a database of unreported Court of Special Appeals rulings for subscribers; Maryland Family Law Update, a separate monthly subscription product with a regularly updated website; the Maryland Lawyers Confidence Index survey, a quarterly snapshot of the state’s legal community; and Maryland’s Largest Law Firms, an annual survey of the state’s legal community. The Legal Editor also will oversee Generation J.D., a blog written by and for young lawyers.
We strive to thoughtfully assess the myriad and important ways that the practice of law shapes the culture and society of Maryland.
The Maryland Daily record offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package.
