Quality Assurance Manager

 

The QA Manager is a tenacious and proactive troubleshooter who works closely with Center for News & Design leadership to investigate and track errors, problems or other concerns reported from local sites.

 

This person serves as a primary contact when a newsroom has a complaint or issue that needs to be addressed. (S)he must diplomatically investigate, resolve and report how/why something occurred. (S)he is the point person for helping ensure excellence in our work product by improving standard operating procedures and workflows, and critical relationships with newsrooms. 

 

Regular interaction with newsrooms, advertising departments, prepress teams and pressrooms is expected. This person must be comfortable working in situations where simple answers are few and resolutions require persistence. A straightforward, yet patient and diplomatic, communication style is crucial.

 

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serve as the key contact when a newspaper has a complaint or issue that needs to be addressed

  • Monitor error reports from newsrooms through Zen Desk ticketing system — responding to, and investigating, resolving

  • Troubleshoot technology/process problems — Newscycle and otherwise — and ensure timely resolution for Center staff and customers

  • Coordinate metrics reporting for deadline performance, issue tracking and staff page production, ensuring all documents are up-to-date

  • Assist in development of targeted training to improve staff quality performance in areas of editing, design and use of technology

  • Collaborate with the Center’s senior management in setting print and digital publishing standards

  • Coach others in the use of GateHouse’s centralized content-management system, as well as troubleshooting technology/process challenges

  • Work with Center managers to assess and adjust, if needed, procedures and checklists to ensure quality work.

  • Work with CND managers to ensure smooth transitions for papers — GH and commercial — into the Center.

 

Experience: 5+ years working and managing in a newsroom or design/editing operation, preferably with some supervisory experience. Will consider talented individuals with less experience.

 

The Quality Assurance Manager must:

  • Have documented experience supervising in a news production setting and coaching employees

  • Possess in-depth understanding of Newscycle's MWC, VDI and cloud environments.

  • Be experienced in design, editing and digital publishing, and be able to coach designers and proofers in achieving expectations

  • Be a multitasker, able to handle curveballs on hard deadlines

  • Be a team player, able to comfortably and productively interact with staffers, colleagues and high-level leadership (internally and externally)

  • Be able to generate and implement creative ideas swiftly, as well as helping to refine and improve ideas from the team

  • Be able to analyze processes and workflows, and implement positive change in an effort to continually improve our publications
    Know, understand and be able to teach AP style.


This is an exempt, salaried position. Work schedule can include nights and weekends. Position reports to Senior Director of Operations.
